Board Effectiveness and Development

Effective board governance is not just about complying with legislative requirements. We agree with the concept David Nadler outlined in his May 2004 Harvard Business Review article "Building Better Board." Nadler identified six keys to building a high performing board --

1. The Right Role     4. The Right Agenda
2. The Right Work 5. The Right Information
3. The Right People 6. The Right Culture

So how do you get it right?

In our experience, a change initiative to help a board become more effective requires three things: a strong board chair and/or CEO committed to building a more effective board; a board that has a clear understanding of its role and expectations; and, an experienced third-party advisor who can help the board create the change.

Developing an effective board of directors is an intentional, deliberate process. Jensen Consulting provides a variety of tools to help improve the effectiveness of your board, including:

  • Executive coaching for executives and directors
  • Board assessment and evaluation
  • CEO evaluation
  • Director retreat facilitation
  • Strategic planning
